However, when talking about the Souls series, most people tend to talk about the Dark Souls trilogy without even mentioning the predecessor that provided the building blocks of the series — Demon’s Souls. Thankfully, this is not the case anymore — Bluepoint Games has done an excellent job of remaking the original Demon’s Souls on the PS3 to allow a new generation of gamers to enjoy this classic. Coming down towards the end of the list, players will find that the Short Sword is one of the better swords in the game. The Short Sword is by far the shortest sword in the game and will require some close combat to get some hits in.

Like most From games, the antagonists have already triumphed long before you appeared and it’s left uncertain to what degree you can remedy the situation. So rather than rushing to meet every enemy the game’s oppressive ambience encourages you to move more cautiously, to always have your shield ready and to expect enemies to appear at any moment, without warning. Sony can be pleased with this launch title, and soulslike players can rub their hands in glee for a great opening of the new generation.
Demon’s Souls
In the original Demon’s Souls rolling was locked to only four directions which made it much more cumbersome. The remake of the game now gives players the modern rolling mechanics which help make the game feel less dated. The camera in Souls-like games is very important as the player should be able to read incoming attacks and respond accordingly.
It really has to be felt to be understood but the DualSense finalizes this game as having the best gameplay of any “Souls” title. This is a curious exercise much like Gus van Sant’s fascinating take on Psycho, an old classic reshot on new stock and on fancier stage sets – though in this instance the results are much more likely to earn universal applause. There’s an inherent imbalance that remains, too – while some boss exploits have been removed, there’s still an easier path you can forge through Demon’s Souls by leaning towards magic-infused builds. The physicality of Demon’s Souls – something just as important to From’s series as its lore-soaked architecture and the pervading sense of dread beauty – has never felt quite so explicit. It also leads to a game that isn’t as refined or smoothly-functioning as some of its contemporaries, making for an experience that can feel quite dated… That is, unless the player decides to try out the remake instead.

Boletaria simply feels more lived in — and in its abandoned state, it feels all the more tragic. The greatest improvements come from a combination of a decade’s worth of technical advancements. Take, for example, the battle against the Storm King, set on a rocky, barren beach. Prior to arriving here, I am harassed by flying manta ray-like monsters in previous levels. In the final confrontation, their aircraft carrier-sized father, the Storm King, appears. This is all to say that even though FromSoftware’s contribution to Demon’s Souls is well appreciated, it, alongside Bloodborne, where always Sony projects.

Those who have faced its trials and tribulations before, can once again challenge the darkness in stunning visual quality and incredible performance. Demon’s Souls is the prototypical Souls game, so it carries a bunch of the hallmarks of the formula that has come to define From Software’s titles in the years since. You play a lone warrior venturing into a dark fantasy land dominated by monsters and demons, where your goal is to slay enemies to gain the souls they carry. Those souls can be spent on leveling your character up by adjusting your stats, which can alter the game by allowing you to use different weapons, speeding up your actions, or giving you access to magic. If you die, however, you lose what souls you’ve earned but haven’t spent, so planning and strategizing, playing carefully, and managing risk are all key to the experience.
Like most of the other Souls games, Demon’s Souls also features a multiplayer component. It allows you to either summon other players to help you fight through the monsters and bosses you face, or invade the worlds of other players to add to their woes (and they can invade yours, too). Though you’ll need a PlayStation Plus subscription to access Demon’s Souls’ multiplayer, you will still be able to see the notes other players leave to either warn you of or trick you about incoming threats. Demon’s Souls takes place in the cursed land of Boletaria, where the king has made use of an ancient power called the Soul Arts, and in doing so, awakened a demon from the dawn of time called the Old One. As a result, the demon has blanketed Boletaria in a dense fog that unleashed all sorts of monsters.
Previous to this remake few people would have said that Demon’s Souls was their favourite From game but that was largely because in its original state it was difficult to obtain and riven by performance issues. That is no longer the case, indeed the fast-loading of the PlayStation 5’s SSD instantly removes one of the greatest frustrations of the original, as death requires but a few seconds wait before you return to the action. FromSoftware has had nothing directly to do with this remake, with development instead being handled by American team Bluepoint Games, who worked on the excellent Shadow Of The Colossus remake. The approach here is very similar, in that although the visuals have been recreated from scratch the underlying level design and gameplay is almost identical to the original. There are some changes to help modernise the game, particularly in terms of the camera and the controls, but they’re still relatively minor. Two years after the launch of PS5, the console offers enough games to be a tempting option for undecided buyers.

The Demon’s Souls remake on PlayStation 5 is almost the exact same experience, gameplay-wise, as the 2009 PlayStation 3 original. And considering how great the original Demon’s Souls was, the Demon’s Souls remake on PS5 is an easy recommendation. Imagine one of the best and most influential games ever made, but with significantly improved graphics, and that sums up the Demon’s Souls remake perfectly.
